Title: Pavement material microwave density measurement methods and apparatuses

Applicant/Assignee: TROXLER ELECTRONIC LABORATORIES, INC

Application No.: 10/971546   Filing Date: 22/Oct/2004

Abstract:

A method of obtaining a material property of a pavement material from a microwave field generally includes generating a microwave frequency electromagnetic field of a first mode about the pavement material. The frequency response of the pavement material in the electromagnetic field can be measured, such as by a network analyzer. The measurement of the frequency response permits correlating the frequency response to a material property of the pavement material sample, such as the density. A method of correcting for the roughness of a pavement material divides the pavement into a shallow layer and a deep layer. Two planar microwave circuits measure the permittivity of the shallow and deep layer. The permittivities are correlated to correct for roughness. An apparatus for obtaining the density of a pavement sample includes a microwave circuit and a network analyzer.

The network analyzer measures the frequency response to determine the density of the pavement material.

Title: Plant root characterization system

Applicant/Assignee: PHENOTYPE SCREENING CORPORATION

Application No.: 11/083128   Filing Date: 17/Mar/2005

Abstract:

An apparatus and method for nondestructively acquiring images of a plant root system is described. The apparatus includes a substrate for supporting the plant root system, a container for holding the substrate, an x-ray radiation source for generating x-ray radiation and directing the radiation to pass through the plant root system, and an x-ray image capture system for receiving the x-ray radiation having passed through the plant root system and for generating an image of the plant root system based on the radiation. The x-ray radiation source generates x-ray radiation having an energy level in the range of about 8 keV to about 20 keV. In this energy range, the attenuation of the x-ray radiation due to air is minimized and the contrast between the root system and the container and substrate is sufficiently high to provide a resolvable image.

The substrate and container are preferably formed of materials having a low mass density, such as less than about 3 pounds per cubic foot, and a low x-ray mass attenuation coefficient. The low density materials of the substrate and the container introduce comparatively low attenuation of the x-ray radiation when compared to the attenuation introduced by the roots, thereby enhancing the visibility of the root system in the image.

Title: Personal care compositions comprising coated/treated metal silicate absorbent particles

Applicant/Assignee: J.M. HUBER CORPORATION

Application No.: 11/050238   Filing Date: 03/Feb/2005

Abstract:

Coated particles of metal (such as calcium) silicate that exhibit excellent odor neutralization and sebum absorption properties when present within certain cosmetic and/or personal care formulations and suspensions are provided. Uncoated calcium silicate exhibits a high pH level that may have a deleterious effect upon such cosmetic and/or personal care compositions, thereby rendering the overall composition ineffective for its intended purpose, particularly if the calcium silicate is present in its usual state at high loading levels. Alternatively, if certain materials present within personal care compositions exhibit a sufficiently low pH level, the effectiveness of such calcium silicates may be compromised as well.

Such novel coated/treated calcium silicates thus permit high loadings of this beneficial odor neutralizing/sebum absorbing additive within cosmetic and/or personal care formulations without causing any appreciable instability issues or viscosity modification concerns or allow for coexistence with such low pH materials without any appreciable reduction in performance capabilities of the calcium silicates themselves. Certain personal care compositions comprising these novel coated calcium silicate particulates are encompassed within this invention as well.
