and rinsing the hair. The method is capable of allowing an inherent color of hair, a dull color of damaged hair or a color of hair dyed by coloring to look clearer or more vivid, or maintaining a clearness of the color of hair.

Abstract:

Materials with high levels of unsaponifiable matter, such as extracts from plants, produce hydrolysates with unique properties. Properties that are sought in traditional saponification of natural oils are a result of low levels of unsaponifiables. These properties include high levels of aqueous surfactant activity, water-solubility or ready water-dispersability, activity as foaming agents, and the like. An objective of traditional saponification processes is to increase the water-solubility and surfactant activity of naturally occurring materials.

It has been found that the application of a hydrolysis process to materials, particularly materials with a high level of unsaponifiables (e.g., at least 6 weight percent of the material), produces a product with properties significantly different from those products resulting from the conventional saponification of materials with less than 6 weight percent of unsaponifiables. The resulting hydrolysates from the practice of the present invention are substantive, resisting both physical and aqueous-based removal from skin and hair, exhibit a very unique surfactant property, and are not foaming agents with water. Hydrolysates according to the present invention may thus be used to enhance the performance of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

These hydrolysates can be bioactive agents and alternative natural carrying agents for topical application of materials, particularly for application of materials to the skin or hair of subjects, and provide a substantive support for the materials carried.

The oil-based hair cosmetic material of the invention is those which comprise (A) a dibasic acid ester compound of general formula (1): wherein R1 is an alkylene group having a carbon number of 2-4, which may be mono- or poly-substituted, R2 and R3 are, independently of one another, an alkyl group having a carbon number of 1-4, which may be mono- or poly-substituted, R4 and R5 are, independently of one another, hydrogen or a methyl group or ethyl group which may be mono- or poly-substituted, m and n are, independently of one another, an integer of 0-4 with m+n>=1 (provided that the cases wherein R2 and R3 are both an ethyl group and m and n are both 1 are excluded), and (B) one or more oil agents selected from the group consisting of a volatile oil, an ester oil, a hydrocarbon oil, an animal/plant oil, and a silicone oil.

Using this, it is possible to realize hair cosmetic materials and hair cosmetics that have both high improvement effects on damaged hair and excellent sensation upon use.

Abstract:

Esterquats (reaction products of a fatty acid source and a trialkanolamine) having a desirable distribution of mono-, di-, and tri-quat esters, such as at least 55 wt. % of the diester and at most 25% of the triester, can be produced by heating a trialkanolamine and a fatty acid source at a temperature ramp rate of 0.4 DEG C. per minute or less. This result can be achieved, for example, by reducing the amount of catalyst to a suboptimal amount for rapid formation of the quat diester.
